Choosing between the Farm and the Beach this Summer
The summer holidays are getting closer. School uniforms have somehow become too small, and family calendars are starting to fill again. Six weeks of sunshine, adventures and family time sounds wonderful.
For parents, carers and grandparents, it can also feel like a very long time to fill. Many families in Dorset naturally think of the beach first. We completely understand why.
Farmer Palmer’s is close to the beaches of Poole and Bournemouth. We are also lucky to sit near the beautiful Jurassic Coast. We appreciate just how special our coastline is.
Sometimes, though, families want something different. That is where a farm day out can really come into its own.
Why a Farm Day Out Works in Hot Weather
British summers are becoming hotter and more unpredictable. Very hot beach days can be wonderful, but they can also feel exposed. Shade is often limited.
Young children can tire quickly in strong sunshine. Parents also spend more time thinking about water, hats, sun cream and breaks.
Farmer Palmer’s offers a very different summer experience.
You can enjoy outdoor play, animals, tractor rides and water play. There are also shaded and sheltered areas across the park. Indoor spaces provide another useful break from the heat.
Our restaurant gives families somewhere comfortable to pause and cool down. Who doesn’t love an ice cream or slush?
During summer 2026, we asked our visitors for feedback. One clear request was for more shade around some open areas and the heatwaves were a bit of a shock.
Families particularly mentioned the Splash Zone. We listened. For 2027, we plan to add more shade in selected open areas. That includes improving shade around parts of the water play area.
It is something a busy beach cannot always provide.
We Love Dorset’s Beaches Too
Poole and Bournemouth have some of the best beaches in the country. The Jurassic Coast also gives families incredible scenery and coastal adventures. We would never pretend otherwise.
A beach day can be brilliant. However, busy summer days can bring parking queues, crowded spaces and very little shade.
At Farmer Palmer’s, parking is free.
You also arrive knowing there is plenty for younger children to do. Our setting is different too. Instead of sea views, you get fields, trees, animals and open countryside. The dinosaur trail is next to the Sherford river and a beautiful lake.
That can feel calmer for families with toddlers and younger children.
Sand, Splashing and Plenty More
The beach wins when it comes to sand. There is no argument there. Farmer Palmer’s still gives children plenty of chances to get sandy. Our Sand Play area includes climbing, digging and active play.
Nearby, the Splash Zone adds water fun on warm days. Children can also move between lots of different activities.There are tractor rides, pedal go-karts, play areas and animals to visit.
That variety can be useful when attention spans are short.
Picnics, Meals and Easy Family Stops
Beach picnics are hard to beat. A sandwich by the sea can be one of summer’s simplest pleasures. Farmer Palmer’s gives families another option. You can bring a picnic and use designated areas around the park.
You can also let someone else handle lunch. The Hen House Restaurant serves freshly prepared meals, drinks and ice creams.
Parents often appreciate having both choices available.
Family Facilities Matter
Anyone with a toddler knows how quickly a toilet stop becomes urgent. That can be difficult on a busy beach. Farmer Palmer’s has regularly cleaned toilets and baby changing facilities. Accessible toilets are also available.
Hand-washing facilities are positioned around the park too. That matters after animal contact, messy play or an enthusiastic ice cream.
Animals Bring Something Completely Different
The Dorset coast has wonderful wildlife. You might spot seabirds, crabs, fish or other coastal creatures. Farmer Palmer’s offers a very different animal experience.
Children can meet goats, sheep, pigs, ponies, guinea pigs and poultry. Animal activities run throughout the day. For many younger children, that close-up experience is unforgettable.

So, Beach or Farm?
We think there is room for both. Some days call for paddling in the sea. Other days need animals, shade, play, water fun and a little more variety.
If you are looking for days out in Dorset with kids, Farmer Palmer’s is a strong alternative.
We are close to Poole, Bournemouth and the Jurassic Coast. You still get fresh air, nature and summer fun.
You also get free parking, family facilities and plenty to keep younger children busy. Sometimes the beach is exactly what you need but parking can be expensive or difficult to locate.
Sometimes, the farm is exactly what you desire.
And on the hottest days, a little extra shade can make all the difference.
