The Benefits of getting your First Job
By giving young people, like you, a role and responsibility; we are helping you to figure out what you’re good at. You’ll learn what you enjoy and what you can offer the working world when you start work following your education.
You will identify your strengths and any areas where you may need further development. All of which will help you further down the line. When you are applying to UCAS for a University placement or that first full time job.
From the moment a young person applies for a position with us, at Farmer Palmer’s, they are learning how to sell themselves by making their application stand out from the rest.
Your application form determines whether you are invited for an interview, so make it count. Spend time telling your potential employers why you’d be such a great member of the team.
Always make sure someone else checks your application over for you, take extra care to check for spelling mistakes! Remember first impressions count! Your future employer may not have met you yet so their only impression of you, at this stage, is from the details on your form. Don’t forget to include hobbies, volunteering, groups/organisations you belong to and any other achievements to really make your application shine!
The most daunting part of the recruitment process for anyone, is the interview stage, but these do get easier the more you do them. It sounds obvious to say it, but it is all down to how you prepare beforehand.
Imagine standing up in front of an interview panel, and other applicants, and delivering an inspiring speech about a subject you’re passionate about.
First Job Interview – Top Tips for Success
To help anyone thinking of applying for a job, here are some Top Tips to help you:
- Always research the company you have applied to, find out as much as you can about them. You can then use all your knowledge during the interview to show the interviewer how keen you are to work there.
- If you haven’t been told in the letter or email, always find out what format the interview will take. It could be one-to-one, a panel interview, a group assessment or a presentation. Knowing will help you prepare, the majority of companies will tell you in advance, but always one to be aware of.
- Research and practice the questions which could come up during interview, there are plenty of examples and templates online now to support you so try a Google search.
- Make sure you are early for the interview and leave nothing to chance. How are you getting there? Plan your route, allowing for roadworks, unexpected delays and traffic depending on the time of day. What are you going to wear?
- Try and stay calm throughout. Nerves are good, it means it’s important to you but if you feel they’re getting away from you, then communicate that this is your first interview. Maintaining eye contact is really important.
- Smile and stay positive and enthusiastic throughout. Actively listen to the interviewer and their questions.
- Always have a list of questions to ask at the end of the interview. It’s important to have a few as some may get covered during the interview. Having a question shows you are interested in the company and the role.
- Follow up with them and always get feedback on your interview, whether you were successful or not. It is particularly important if you haven’t got the job, as this will help you get the next one. It’s never easy to hear, but how else are you going to improve and prepare for your next interview? If you don’t ask you will never know, and you will carry on making the same mistakes.
